Hello fellow makeup enthusiasts! Welcome to my first blog post. With your help, my goal is to create a forum for great makeup, hair and fashion tips for makeup artists and fashionistas alike. This being My first entry, I figured the best way to start off would be to discuss the true foundation of great makeup application – the skin!
The key to a smooth, flawless makeup look is to have smooth, flawless skin. I know, it’s a conundrum, but it’s never too late to start down the road toward a clean, clear, fresh-looking face.
So first thing's first...
3. Wash Your Face!
The Scenario
It’s 2 A.M. You just came in from a long night out. You’re a little tipsy (One cocktail too many tends to do that), and you have to go to work in the morning. You decide – while collapsing into bed fully clothed – that putting off washing your face won’t hurt.
| Would you believe me if I told you it’s her 21st birthday? I’ll take your silence as a “No”. |
The Problem
Your skin is renewing itself every day, every minute, every second. That means you just made the decision to let who knows how many hours of oil, dead skin, and environmental dirt (see: smog) pile up on your face. Add to that the makeup you just neglected to wash off and you have the perfect storm for bad skin.
The Solution
Using a soft washcloth, gently massage your facial cleanser into your skin with warm water. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry, then close your pores with toner and add moisturizer. It only takes a few minutes and it will give your skin ample time to breathe overnight, even if you are only getting a few hours of sleep.
Oh, and by the way…
2. Get Plenty of Sleep!
The Scenario
Your alarm jolts you awake from your booze-addled sleep at 6 A.M. sharp. As you drag yourself out of bed and make your zombie walk toward the shower you promise yourself for the third time this month that you will not stay out so late on a work night. You hop into the shower and quickly scrub off last night’s makeup to reveal, dull, sallow, blemished skin. You wince at your reflection as you wipe the steam off your bathroom mirror and proceed to pile on the foundation.
The Problem
In addition to the primordial soup you just left on your face all night, your poor sleep patterns are giving you a less-than-stellar complexion. Your deepest level of sleep is the time when your skin is renewing itself the most, and just a few hours of sleep isn’t enough to get you to that level. Dr. Harold Lancer, a dermatologist from Beverly Hills, told the Los Angeles Times, "During hours of sleep, cortisol and insulin production inversely peak so that collagen 1 production is accelerated." According to Lancer, collagen 1 helps firm the skin and maximize water retention, keeping the skin naturally moisturized. Not getting enough sleep can interfere with this process.
The Solution
Get to bed earlier! It’s that simple. Experts estimate anywhere from 6 – 9 hours to be the ideal amount of sleep for the average adult. If you’re not getting that then don’t be surprised if you look like an extra on the set of “Walking Dead”
| Yeah… You’ve got a little something on your – no, the other – never mind. |
1. Eat Right and Exercise!
The Scenario
You got through work today running solely on Starbucks coffee and Five Hour Energy drinks. Your healthy meal for the day was an Activia yogurt. That’s it. Now that you’re home you throw your jacket and purse over that treadmill you bought as a reminder to fulfill your New Year’s resolution to “live healthy”.
The Problem
The saying, “You are what you eat,” is so cliché, but so true. If your body is craving the nutrients it needs to function properly, it goes into survival mode. That means, your hair, skin, and nails, get the short end of the stick.
The Solution
“A balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants can make a real difference in the appearance of your skin,” According to Dr. Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia University, and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania. So imagine this is your mother speaking to you and remember to eat your veggies, proteins, and grains. And drink plenty of water, your skin will thank you for it.
